On 1 January 2019, we opened a clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry in Haus Abendstern in Bielefeld – the first child and adolescent psychiatry clinic in Bielefeld and the surrounding area. At last, parents no longer have to travel many kilometres to the nearest emergency department, but instead have access to 27 beds and 16 day-clinic places in the immediate vicinity to meet the needs of their children.
However, the outdoor area had lain fallow for a long time, was unsightly and could not be used by the children and young people. The foundation recognised the potential: thanks to its support, we were able to create an oasis for these children and young people in the outdoor area that distracts them from everyday hospital life.
The new play equipment and the barbecue area have a huge impact on our young patients. Exercise, fresh air and informal encounters with other children at play provide balance, relaxation and enjoyment – which is also reflected in the therapy's success.
