Bethel - Disco fever in the Neue Schmiede

Nadine Früchel tanzt auf der Tanzfläche. Im Hintergrund sind andere Menschen.

A small queue forms in front of the Bethel leisure and cultural centre "Neue Schmiede" shortly before 7 pm for "Disco No. 7". Nadine Früchel also joins the queue. She has travelled all the way from a neighbouring district by bus and tram. She lives there and receives outpatient support from Bethel. She never misses the monthly event. "I'm a dancing mouse," she reveals full of anticipation.

After a short queue, the time has come: the doors to the large hall are opened. Red, purple and green spotlights bounce over the heads of the visitors. The voice of a pop singer booms out of the loudspeakers. The dance floor fills up quickly and most of the guests are on the move by the chorus of the well-known hit. Some just sway slightly with their upper bodies, others twirl across the dance floor. Right in the centre: Nadine Früchel. The 44-year-old is completely in her element. She spins, swings her arms and bends her knees with the rhythm.

Disco visitors dance in the colourful spotlight.

Whether you're in a wheelchair or on your feet, young or old, exuberant or shy - everyone can dance and have fun to their heart's content at "Disco No. 7". Nobody makes fun of anyone and there are no intrusive glances. The inclusive disco provides a safe environment for people with and without disabilities. "I wouldn't go to another discotheque on my own because there are too many people there. I don't feel safe there," says Nadine Früchel. She has been to other clubs, but only with a supervised group. She likes the informal atmosphere in the "Neue Schmiede". "The music is good and the people are nice," she enthuses.

Every first Wednesday of the month, the turntables run hot, always under a different motto - whether "rock music", "German pop" or "disco fever". Nadine Früchel doesn't care what genre the music is. "I like everything, especially hits." As the events take place during the week and most of the guests are back at work the next day, everyone finishes at 10 pm. "That way I can get a good night's sleep tomorrow at Handweberei Bethel," she says and heads for the dance floor again. She wants to make the most of this time ...
