She feels free with music

As soon as the music plays from the speakers, Jessica Brandt is transformed: she swings her arms rhythmically to the beat and twirls around. Her long plaited hair bounces up and down. The otherwise shy 18-year-old is completely in her element when she dances. Worries or frustration - everything falls away from her. When she dances, it's all about the song, the choreography and the group. For over a year now, the young woman has been attending the Integrative Sports Community programme run by the Eben-Ezer Foundation, which is part of Bethel. Eight girls and boys aged between 14 and 22 also take part.

Every step, every swing of the hips and every turn is just right - it looks so relaxed, but it takes a lot of practice. "Learning a new sequence of steps is difficult," says the passionate dancer. But there is a trick: "First the feet, then the arms!" she reveals. Jessica Brandt is very conscientious and also practises diligently at home, confirms her trainer. The teenager even supports the group as a lead dancer. She would never have imagined doing this before, but the sport has made her more self-confident. "Jessica is a great help to me and the others. I can rely on her 100 per cent," continues trainer Lena Jäger.

This cannot be taken for granted and is by no means the case in all areas. Jessica Brandt lives in a supervised residential group for young people and attends the Eben-Ezer Foundation's special school. She is currently taking part in a career guidance programme. The 18-year-old has not shown much staying power in internships so far, "which makes me all the more pleased that she keeps at it and is so motivated," says Lena Jäger, who is studying social work. Jessica Brandt would love to turn her hobby into a career. She has already set her sights on her next goal: a trainer's licence. It's worth persevering!
